I love the hell out of the Iron Man film. It’s lean, it’s well done, and it’s just one hell of a great action film. I especially love Terence Howard as Rhodey, which was a great surprise. But he’s been replaced by Don Cheadle for Iron Man 2. I’d heard it was a financial replacement, but this is just odd:

It didn’t help that, according to one source, Favreau and his producers were ultimately unhappy with Howard’s performance, and spent a lot of time cutting and reshooting his scenes. (Favreau could not be reached for comment, while Howard’s publicist says: ”Terrence had a tremendous experience working on Iron Man.”)

As such, when Favreau and screenwriter Justin Theroux went to map out the sequel they found themselves minimizing Howard’s story line. Once Marvel learned that Favreau was thinking of curtailing the role, the studio went to the actor’s agents with a new and drastically reduced offer — a number that’s similar to what supporting cast members were paid for the first movie.

I would never have guessed such a thing–I thought Howard was great in the first one.

This is probably one of the greatest inventions ever. Netflix, if you have an account, lets you watch films on-demand. I’m watching Bad Boys right now. Why? Because I can. I love it.

The nice Beta Society people made a local slasher flick! Premieres tomorrow! Buy tickets! See the trailer and cover your junk!

(trailer is NSFW!)

They are also showing and Mystery Science Theatering the Friday the 13th where Corey Feldman kills Jason at the premiere, at the Market Theatre, Wednesday, October 29, 2008 8:00 PM.

UPDATE AND REVIEW, 10/30/08: We saw Junkbucket last night at the Market Theatre. Like Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, it tells a simple, yet inspirational story. Junkbucket is an ultimately uplifting tale–it cuts to the literal boner of human emotion, and the simple need we all share and long to offer to our fellow people: that we are all, in the end, the same, and that we can all effect positive change on each other. The film additionally offered gentle, tender slasher film “kills”, which were handled with a loving, humane, and lingering attention to detail, and a positive and affirming respect for human life. The ultimate message I took away, from Junkbucket, was that human life is a special, and curious thing. Except when Junkbucket cuts off your motherfucking junk, in which case you’re just fucked. Also: STICK IT IN HER DUPA PFFT.

Thanks to Elizabeth for this–I’d forgotten about a couple of these. But leave Labrynth alone, damn it! I mean… it has David Bowie’s magic pants:

I love the first two Underworld films–gloriously over the top, a pretty decent story, lots of Matrix-y special effects… and honestly, vampires versus werewolves set to a pretty good soundtrack. Whats not to like? If you’ve seen them, you need to see the trailer for the third Underworld, a prequel set in the past, for how the “war” from the first two movies came to be:

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans trailer

If you’ve never seen the first two films, ahoy–epic spoilers abound. Since about every character from the first two films is immortal, they need a really, really nice job of apparently bringing back every single actor from the first films. And no–that girl that looks like Kate Beckinsale is NOT Kate Beckinsale’s character, but is supposed to look like her. That’s another huge spoileriffic bit. I think this third film is set a couple hundred years before Beckinsale’s character from the first films was even born yet.

And, yeah, this one. Opens Friday the 13th, February 2009. I’m so there:

Friday The 13th

No spoilers. Just back from an IMAX advance screening.

It is the best superhero film ever made. It is one of the best films I have ever seen.

The Watchmen trailer that preceded Dark Knight actually made me tear up by the end.

Spread the word.

I’d been curious to see the new Rambo film (stop laughing, please) out of a sense of nostalgic curiosity. This review on Variety, though, made me change my mind. Its simply a depressing review of what sounds like an unhappy film, with limited plot and running time to boot. Not that the originals were shiny happy films, but at least there was something to them. This sounds just bland.

Yippee Ki-Yay! Real tools used by “hackers” in films. I think the last time was when Trinity did a port scan in the second Matrix film at the power plant.

I assume you’ve all seen it, yes? No? Why not? Three guesses as to who says this line:

Starting tonight, people will die. I’m a man of my word. Moo hoo hwahaha!

Warning: this is really geeky.

Really well done, check it out. Someone hacked up cinematics from all the games from the first edition of Warcraft III, up through World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, scored to music from various Blizzard games. Did you know that Legendary Pictures is also now in pre-pre development of a Warcraft trilogy of theatrical films? Nevermind that it would be a series of films based on a game; the mythology is actually extremely well developed, and could make for a very good and fun set of films.

Film one: Jaina, Thrall, and Prince Arthas lead their people to stave off the threat of the Burning Legion. I like the Legion least, so lets get them out of the way first. Short version for those who don’t care: demonic alien invasion of the world. One note, “Hi! Sorry for the mess, here to enslave or destroy y’all!”, but might as well open with a bang to ensure the sequels get made. Jaina/Thrall/Arthas love triangle for the ladies, play up the Beauty and the Beast angle between Jaina and Thrall. Screw Gorana, Khadgar, and the Dark Portal, the other big core bit of the Warcraft mythology. This story would be better. End the film with the remaining/departing demons leaving behind a nasty surprise in the North, in the form of a gentle plague…

Film one idiots version: Big SFX, big explosions, big fights, forbidden love. Think Lord of the Rings with swords, magic, and demons. Oh, wait…

Film two: darker, way more downbeat film. World rebuilds from the great war, but things are getting worse, and the plague is spreading–even worse, something is controlling the hell out of the plague, and the people who die come back as zombies and undead to join in a new army that’s trying to wipe out everything in the world. Who dunnit? This guy: the Lich King. Jaina and Thrall lead the armies of their people, to hold off the invasion and the endlessly growing army of undead, moving closer and closer to that forbidden Orc/Human loving! But… Jaina holds out hope for poor Arthas, who loves her, and has gone north to find the plague source! Except he’s going loopy as shit, because of … well, all the insane crap he’s seeing, and the Lich King getting into his head psychic-style. When Arthas finds the source of the plague, in a little old village and keep, he can do the right thing versus the easy thing. He goes easy, and orders everyone slaughtered. Things go bad, and half-bent, and–oh noes!–Arthas finds the Lich King, and takes up his sword, to slay him. Oops. Cursed sword, evil Excalibur. Lich King, who was quite dead and trapped, is freed, Arthas becomes the reborn Lich King. The south is about to be overrun George Romero style. Thrall and Jaina are about to make whoopee as doom approaches. Remember the end of the Two Towers film, with Gandalf arriving to save Helm’s Deep? Arthas arrives to “save the day”. Except he kills his dad the King, and reveals himself–oh snap! And thank you, come again in the third installment.

Film two idiots version: Tragedy, more forbidden love (maybe under the shirt!) and lots of zombies.

Film two extra idiots version:
ZOMBIES!

Film three: Shit blows up. Forbidden love! Loss. Comic relief. Sad. Yay, the world is saved!

Film three idiots version: Shit blows up. Box office!

For the other game geeks in the house, Blizzard also announced the next WoW expansion, centering on the Lich King (and now I’ll never catch up, ever, since the level cap again raised to 80, alas) is coming.

Editorial note: Yes, I left off the elves. Screw the elves. They’re far too emo in the Warcraft universe anyway.

More from Digg: “Despite the fact that BitTorrent has been around for a good 6 years now, the lightning fast file sharing protocol hasn’t completely taken off in the mainstream. Since we post a decent amount about BitTorrent around here, we figured it was just time we put out a beginner’s guide to BitTorrent.”

I.e., if you want to start learning how to download “free” media to your system in the modern world with torrents, read this. Go. Now.

OK, this looks pretty damn neat, now. The new, and I think final, Transformers trailer is out.

May 11th, 2007, in City Life, Family, Films, Friends, General, Geocaching, Seattle.

Tonight, our friend Doug is part of an art show downtown, for his print work. This will certainly lead to one too many drinks, especially given that there will be obligatory wine and chatting at the art show, and obligatory hanging out afterwards. It’ll be fun. If we have time (and aren’t three sheets to the wind) we may try to see 28 Weeks Later. Maybe.

Either Saturday or Sunday morning we’re going to run down to REI to check out their selection of GPS units for geocaching, and we likely need to do a full grocery store run (which is a pain). We usually let it go until all our supplies are run down, and then go and get 2-4 weeks of stuff at once. It’s fun, except for the half-dozen trips it requires up and down the stairs and forever unloading and storing stuff. Saturday night we also have the Mariners/Yankees game, and then Sunday is Mother’s Day, so off to West Seattle. I was tempted to check out that Martime Festival down on the waterfront as well, but aside from maybe getting to ride around Elliot Bay in a tugboat, it looks pretty bland.

There’s other stuff as well, which I know I’m completely forgetting now. I think we’ll have free time while we’re asleep.

May 11th, 2007, in Films, Seattle.

About freaking time: 28 Weeks Later is out, tonight! We’re going to see it at the Seattle Cinerama, so I expect that seeing hordes of blood vomiting, screaming, snarling, psycopathic, and generally unhappy three-story tall people will give us both pleasant dreams tonight.

EDIT: D’oh, tactical error. We can’t see it tonight; we have a friend’s show to go see. And tomorrow night the Mariners/Yankees game. And Sunday is Mothers Day, and I can’t see my mother-in-law wanting to watch crazed Britons vomit blood… sometime next week, I suppose…

We’re going to see The Wind That Shakes the Barley with Cillian Murphy tonight. Anyone seen this? What did you think?
