My favorite music venue in Seattle

Originally uploaded by joeszilagyi

I love going to shows here. The only thing that stinks a bit about it is that it’s a bit pricey, so we don’t go too often. The sound, the ambience, the food (from it’s restaurant, Wild Ginger)… It’s down on 3rd & Union.

An security expert hired by 11 Oklahoma State University students picks apart the testimony of the RIAA’s own expert witness, pointing out the oversimplifications made by the RIAA in its lawsuits against suspected file-sharers. Read the PDF document, it’s awesome. This guy is basically a trusted expert by the FBI, the Secret Service, and he has various National Security Agency certifications, so he likely does undisclosed for them. Toss in little things like a CISSP and being keynote speaker at security conferences…? He outright pwnz the RIAA’s “technical” nonsense on file sharing in this legal document, and it’s awesome.

I signed up. If you want to be a music voyeur, this is what I’m listening to.

I’ve been swamped at work of late, and we’ve been out and about a fair bit when not working to decompress. That’s why the blog and Livejournal had gone dead of late, and it’s taking me ages to get back to anyone on e-mails and Instant messaging (among other things, that are done with…). We just got back from a three day weekend with family out on the Olympic Peninsula, and this week looks to be even more hectic. It’s the Bite of Seattle, Dolores O’Riordan is playing Seattle, and some crappy book is coming out on Friday (pre-delivered from Amazon, w00t!).

And, if all goes well, I may be the owner of one of these bad boys for only $350 this week, rather than the $550 retail price. Long, convoluted story. Suffice it to say, Sprint takes care of customers with accounts dating back over ten years for their cellular service when push comes to shove. For the nerds out there, yes, I know a ‘newer’ model with Windows Mobile 6 is out this very week. I don’t need nearly the firepower that model has, and I specifically need Windows Mobile 5 for my purposes. This model will easily last me 1.5 to 2.5 years, I’d imagine. It’s not the best smartphone for Sprint. That would probably be the IP-830W, but that’s a sexy international model. Which I can’t afford, and again, Windows Mobile 6. Alas.

I do love having a million things to do, though. It’s refreshing. So is the nice tan I got this weekend, and the fact that I spent time in as close the real world is going to get to the Misty Mountains. Just gorgeous, out there.

Try to guess what band we’re going to see tonight, at the Triple Door?

This is such a great song. Yes, I posted it a month or two ago. So? Listen to it!

The Paperboys are playing the Showbox downtown for St. Patty’s day! Hurray! Go check them out, listen to their music on MySpace. Amazing, amazing band. I think this’ll be my 5th or 6th time, and Andi’s 11th or 12th. This song, Going Places, is getting to be my favorite, from their last album:

I’m going places with no traces of home
Where the faces are foreign I can wander and roam
Never been on this road but I like where it’s going
Carry me further into the unknown

I’m watching the runway from here in the lounge
Last call for boarding and then I’ll be bound
To a new destination and different days
To lift me beyond the far and away

I’m going places, with no traces of home
Where the faces are foreign I can wander and roam

The birds and the bells they go too much to tell
They come early and loud introducing themselves
Its in these moments I float in between
The light in the room and the shadows of dreams
I’m going places, with no traces of home
Where the faces are foreign I can wander and roam

I posted some Paperboys vidoes (live, and actual video) here before. Go see!

Last year (around our weddding anniversary), my wife and I went to see The Paperboys at the Triple Door downtown. Awesome, awesome show. She snagged two short videos on the camera. Enjoy!

While you’re at it, check out these two music videos that they uploaded themselves to YouTube themselves. We freaking love these guys.

We saw the Greencards at the Triple Door Thursday night, and are going back tonight to see the Paperboys. Anyone else been there? It’s a dinner theater, and such a nice place to see a show…

I want this as my cell phone ring tone. I’ll have to redo it to get it into my phone. I currently have Johnny Cash’s CRY CRY CRY, but figured I am about due for something new. And on that note I need to get out of the house.

I ordered the score to Battlestar Galactica after noticing it on “Amazon Recommends” while looking for something unrelated today, a tech book for Apache. has always said she wanted it, so I ordered it. I got my confirmation mail of successful order at 1:07pm. At 3:16pm, I got the “it’s shipped” email, and estimated delivery of 6/26/06. At 4:38pm, my doorbell rings and it’s the damned CD! Already!

Wow.

EDIT: Packing slip seems to say it was packed at 1:55pm. So:

1:07pm: order
1:55pm: packed for delivery (at least order slip printed)
3:55pm: shipped
4:38pm: delivered via https://www.dynamex.com/

What the hell? That’s a same day delivery company. I have an Amazon Prime membership, but never seen anything like THIS before. Every delivery ever was via UPS or USPS… it was sent from South Othello Street in Seattle, in I think Georgetown. Did this guy just get my CD and hop right on the viaduct to race up here like it was life and death? This is during rush hour, to boot!

While working, I usually listen to music. I love putting EVERY song I have have in my computer on shuffle. It helps keep me focused by having our entire music collection (11+ days’ worth, tons of CDs, plus assorted MP3s) randomly rolling along. The variety keeps me from falling into mental ruts. Just now, it transitioned from the theme song of SPIDER-MAN AND HIS AMAZING FRIENDS to Tool’s PRISON SEX.

Was listening to Best Bit and I was like, “Oh, wonder if she’s touring…”

Good morning. Turns out that we missed The Paperboys playing at the Tractor Tavern in Ballard on the 24th and 25th. Cest la vie. Or, grr. I wanted to see them again and knew of them coming, but completely forgot. They’ll be back for a festival in July, at least. In other news my Dunkin Donuts subscription is now in. Hooah.

I
Rule the midnight air, the destroyer
Born
I shall soon be there, deadly mass
I
Creep the steps and floor, final darkness
Blood
Lambs blood painted door, I shall pass

So let it be written
So let it be done
I’m sent here by the chosen one
So let it be written
So let it be done
To kill the first born pharaoh son
I’m creeping death

So we get to the Tractor Tavern way the hell early after a nice disgusting dinner of jalapeno bacon burgers and mushrooms at Kidd Valley in Queen Anne (Sammiches was the tied winnah from the poll!). Turns out we accidentally paid to get in early for a totally seperate show, with a totally seperate cover, of The Greencards, a South Australian (with a Londoner) Bluegrass band. After they booted everyone, we got back in to see the Paperboys. A solo blues guy named Rich Hope opened up, and pretty much had the crowd going nuts just by himself. Sorta rockabilly blues, fun as hell.

Then came the Paperboys! Kick-ass show, right across the board, they played two full sets of 12 and 11 songs, with a couple of loooong jam sessions mixed in. I even got my favorite song, Easychair, played… second song on the second set. Awesome. They must have played a good solid 2 1/2 hours, all told, and even lead a sing-a-along of 80s music. I think we got something like five hours of live music. My legs and ears still hurt. But it was awesome, especially since we were up front at the stage for nearly all of it.

Seattleites! Tonight: Paperboys at the Tractor Tavern. The last time and I tried to see them back in Connecticut was the last time they were out there that we could actually both attend schedule wise. Unfortunately, this was three weeks after 9/11, and they decided given the hoo-ha going on to stay in Canada then. But! We finally get to see them, plus its the release party for their new album. Double groovy. I just wish we had time today to go the Lockspot Cafe too, but alas. I hear the Tractor has good food.

Describing The Paperboys’ sound isn’t easy. Never ones to do the same thing twice or rest on their past success, their music is always evolving, yet grounded by the vision of Mexican-Canadian founder Tom Landa. Like Paul Simon, Steve Earle, Los Lobos and the Band before them, The Paperboys redefine their musical style from one album to the next - sometimes even from song to song on one album.

Formed in 1992, the band began as a Celtic Pop outfit, but soon added other musical elements to the mix. Today they slide effortlessly from Americana Country to Latin Groove to Stax influenced Soul tunes or to a ragin Celtic Stomp.

You could call it Latino Celtic Grass or Country Soul. Most describe it as Acoustic-based Roots music. But screw it, just call it good music!

No recent news. Half asleep, slurping on coffee, dreaming of raisin bread and a hard boiled egg. ’s job hunt proceeds. No leads. If anyone knows of anything, perhaps retail, shoot her an email. We went to see Starflyer 59 up at the Paradox in Ballard this past weekend with Mike and Craig Jooones, and their friend Angela. They got musical chops out the butt, but… meh. Way too emo for me. The vocal sound and mixing was atrocious too, I don’t think I could make out 1/10th of the lyrics. At one point, Andi and I tried to dance, barely. I think the people wearing black-rimmed glasses became more rigid in protest. Good band. I just wish I knew what the hell the singer was saying.

BUT! We drank at the Jolly Roger Tap Room, the front end of the Pacific Maritime Brewery. Gotta love a pirate bar with kick-ass beer and fried pickles. I think this weekend I want to go to El Diablo again.

I definitely want Ivars this weekend. I’ve been wanting some since we got back. By the way, guess what crappy movie starts a run at a crappy theater on November 18th? I sure wouldn’t want to have to suffer through something such as that, no sirree, not me…

This here is a screen shot of my My Music folder (I’m too arsed out today to figure out how to copy/paste this text form, and this looks better anyway):

Now keep in mind, 100,000 KB equals 100 megabytes. So, we have over half a gigabyte each of Tom Waits and Dave Matthews band. It’s funny how our collection always seems so huge and massive and diverse, until I realize it’s just tons of albums by the same people.
