British crisp comparison

November 16th, 2009 Joe Szilagyi Comments

Wherein I eat four smallish bags of local crisps (chips, to us Americans) to see what is what. It seemed like a good idea for 20 seconds at the gas station by my hotel, when I wanted a bottle of soda.

At ten years old, delighted sight. At thirty-three, glee stupidity.

Doritos “Tangy Cheese”

Apparently, according to the bag, this is flavored with the well known traditional British cheese known as “Traditional cheese flavour,” whatever that is. The texture, shape and crunch are vintage American Doritos. I think they just mass-produce these chips by the trillions. The cheese flavor tastes… Latin. Kind of. And cheesy. And Doritos-y. I can’t really place what “Traditional cheese flavour” is, but it tastes like slightly exotic Doritos.

Traditional Britis--er, Americ--er, Mexican?

Traditional Britis--er, Americ--er, Mexican?

I’d go so far as to say they’re a bit better tasting than American “Nacho cheese” flavored classic Doritos. The cheese powder they use to infuse Doritos feels a bit… fluffier, than I’m used to.

The scent of the crisps is vintage Doritos: cheese, corn, nothing unique. That sums up just about every brand of Doritos ever made (except possibly that Buffalo sauce one) pretty nicely. Bland, inviting, wholesome, and the same everywhere, like a junk food home away from home.

Walkers “Quavers,” Cheese flavour

Scent: non existent, or barely cheesy at best. They look like weird hybrid Fritos/pork rinds. They feel like potato-based pork rinds. The mysterious “Traditional cheese flavour” makes another appearance, but with strong hints of onion flavoring. They are loud when you bite down. I mean, really, seriously loud for a chip or crisp. The first few have virtually no flavor, but then it begins to quickly build as your teeth, tongue, and taken over by puffed potato. They taste and feel incredibly rich, though.

I can’t see eating more than a couple handfuls without feeling sick.

Walkers “Worcester Sauce” crisps

The bag, upon opening, smells spectacular. The scent reminds me of hamburgers and steak with potatoes. It’s like a cook out in a little foil bag. Visually, they’re… crisps. Nothing special, there. The texture is odd; they seem to nearly crumble and explode as you bite down, but it’s not unpleasant. The taste: reminds me of a severely toned down salt and vinegar chip, almost, but with subtle Worcester flavors. It’s not a “strong” chip that tries to beat you in the face with flavor; it’s almost quietly flavorful. I think these would go great with a glass of cold beer. I was hoping for a much stronger Worcester flavor—I love the taste of Worcester sauce. They’re good, but a bit of a let down.

Like a face with a wart? Look close.

Emergency late game update: I wrote the above after eating about 5-6 of these crisps, and then discovered another 2-3 that all but screamed Worcester. It looks like the bag is uneven. The later crisps are much better.

So manly it seared my flesh on contact.

Walkers “Max” paprika flavour

This is not an effeminate potato chip.

I was most looking forward to these, as I adore the smell and taste of paprika—I have to, I’m half Hungarian. They smell like barbeque flavor crisps. They look like what I suppose a good paprika crisp ought to look like, never having seen paprika crisps before. The texture is that thick, crunchy sort of ridged chip, rather than that weak girly kind of chip that feels stale half an hour after you open the bag.

Paprika, garlic, onion, and tomato are the flavors here. Oddly for this kind of junk food, I can actually taste them all. Even though my palate and breath have already been ruined by the preceding three types I’ve tried tonight, I can taste them all. This is my favorite chip of the bunch.

Conclusions

Don’t eat four wildly different types of little crisps bags, because it’s unholy and now I feel ill. This is my breath currently:

Did I ever tell you my favorite color was blue?

Did I ever tell you my favorite flavour was paprika?

London photos

November 15th, 2009 Joe Szilagyi Comments

I got to go into London one day on this trip. Ade Brown graciously stuck out a wildly windy and rain-soaked day, as we wandered all over the city, from locations featured in From Hell to the Lord Mayor’s annual parade to watching football in a pub to several other pubs. Douglas Townsend joined us later on, for more wandering, until we finally met up with Lindsey Duff at a charity benefit for the London Rollergirls, a roller derby team. Photos here in the slide show, or click here for full size on flickr:

Thanks, guys. That was an absolutely wonderful time.

Portland

November 5th, 2008 Joe Szilagyi Comments

We’re off to Portland for two evenings, for our wedding anniversary tomorrow! No laptops! No internets! No elections! Yay! Let’s see how long I last before flooding the place with a flickr cameraphone assault…

Do the Puyallip, part 1

September 13th, 2007 Joe Szilagyi Comments

It’s a day off today, so Andi and I are off to do the Puyallip. That’s the Puyallip Fair, for the non-Washington people reading this. It’s allegedly like or superior to the Big E back in New England, but I’ll be the judge of that, thank you very much. More later.

SeaTac and I-5 and construction

Tonight, our friend Jakob flies into town, and tomorrow, Rebo does, for the Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle. That means in two days I’ll be making two trips down I-5 to SeaTac airport and then two more as they fly out on Sunday and Monday. People from work have been staying home and and working remotely because of the massive I-5 construction. This’ll be my first foray into it. Wish me luck…

New sport for us

I have a feeling that by next weekend or so, we’ll be beginning to dabble in something new. A sport that involves exercise, puzzle solving, hiking, math, science, and exploring both Seattle and the surrounding King County areas. Here’s a hint:

Three birds with one stone: we get our gaming fix in; we get to explore areas around us; we get exercise.

Tired

Tired, originally uploaded by rootology.

So, we went to Yelm today for ’s family reunion. There’s pictures of stuff scattered in my Flickr and more to come in hers soon if you care to look. The ride down on I5 was gorgeous, and the party was fun. Not quite as much fun as the first one I did, but that was out in Port Angeles in 2003 and was three whole days of fun with about twice as many people (only about 40-50 there today). Her family is HUGE.

Anyway, I’m so tired now… the ride back was a phenominal pain since there was five car accident south of Tacoma, and add in that for some reason everyone from that point on until we were like all the way to Sea-tac drove about 20mph. Slow, stupid morons. I hate Sunday drivers.

Also: Yelm is pretty.

Seattle, day 1.0

We drove from Butte, Montana to Seattle and arrived late last night. I’m sitting in my in-law’s living right now with and my mother in law, watching Mythbusters on the Discovery Channel, waiting for UPS to show up with all our computer equipment from Connecticut. Once it gets here, it’s off to Best Buy to purchase a Comcast starter kit, and then full steam ahead on settling in here for life on the Westside. Andi and I are going with our friend Mike to see Mirrormask tomorrow night, somewhere downtown I imagine. Saturday there’s a big family party planned of some sort as a welcome back for us.

We’re already starting to nose around classified ads on Craiggs List and in the Seattle PI, looking for apartments. We’re thinking (in order of preference), 1. Ballard, 2. Capital Hill, 3. West Seattle. Ballard, I think, I would prefer the most, or West Seattle, if it’s close (or vaguely close) to the water and Elliot Bay. Up next, though, after the Internets are up and running at the inlaws is to pick out a good self storage place. ABF says that our stuff will arrive as planned on either Monday or Tuesday, so we’ll likely be loading it’s contents into storage on Wednesday next week. After that… Andi’s job hunt, and looking for our own permanent lodging. Adjusting to life out here. I’m feeling pretty tired and out of sorts, still, after the pure chaos of the two weeks before we left (packing, Furio’s death, you name it) and the past weeks’ driving.

We’re going to move the mattress in the spare bedroom on the first floor up into the finished attic, so everyone in the house has a bit more privacy (both our in-laws, and us). The spare bedroom will then serve as a sort of ad-hoc office for me, while we’re here for a while. Mojo is up there now, with her food and litter. Andi’s parents have a cat of their own, a crotchety old indoor-outdoor girl named Gabrielle who is wildly territorial. Mojo, from previous experience, does not play well with other girl kitties. So, we keep them separated, but my mother in law wanted to let Mojo down from the attic for a bit to explore the house (Gabrielle was outside). So far, our little girl seems to be adjusted fairly OK, but cries a bit when we’re not with her, especially since she’s alone without Furio. We slept downstairs last night, but will be upstairs from now on. It’ll be a bit easier on her, then. Plus, we’re going to setup Andi’s own PC upstairs, so that I’ll have less distractions in the office while working. It’ll be good for Mojo, that way, as well.

Sitting here, in this house, is a bit odd. I’ve never had a good family life before. My parents, as parenting skills go, were monsters. I’m still, along with people who knew me through that, amazed that I’m not utterly fucked up from it. I have no idea why I’m not. But this… this is just surreal, and I feel like I won the lottery. Sitting around the dinner table with Andi and her parents last night, sitting around the table this morning with Andi and her mom, just chatting over coffee… yeah. I’m feeling like the luckiest guy in the world right about now.

About the rest of the drive, yesterday: what else can I say about the Rockies, and then driving through the Cascade Mountains? Brilliant. Utterly, singularly brilliant. We are going back. I haven’t seen even 1/10000th of what I want to see out in that country. Also, new cool amazing thing: the Columbia River Gorge is just unearthly in it’s beauty. Once we get into proper shape, again at long last, I have every intention I think of hiking that amazing place.

It’s also apparently monsoon season here in Western Washington, but it’s just a bit gray outside and pleasantly cool–not too unpleasant, at all. If this is what it’s like most of the time through autumn and winter, I can definitely get used to it.
